Introduction

After many years of planning and negotiation, November saw the commencement of the Roche Clarecastle Remediation Project with the first shipment sailing Foynes Port on November 30th.

This project involves three phases: Clean to Shell, Demolition and Remediation. The participation of our teams will be relevant to complete the handling of multiple containers used to transport the removed contaminated soil.

What is the project about?

Upon the completion of phase number one and two, this project involves the export of approximately 125,000 tonnes of contaminated soil from the former Roche Pharmaceutical facility in Clarecastle. This sensitive and large scale project has been meticulously planned with our clients Indaver (waste management solutions provider) and Shipit (international shipping and ECommerce fulfilment services).

Considering our expertise coordinating and operating complex logistics projects, our DSG team at Foynes was appointed as Agents, Stevedores and Terminal Operators to handle all the cargo and shipping requirements at Foynes Port. Our team is also providing the container handling equipment, the reason why, specialised training was provided to our staff to ensure safe handling conditions prior our participation in this project.

The importance of the project

Unlike previous projects for contaminated soil exports, this cargo is being shipped in sealed containers (purpose built 20’ ISO containers) to ensure its safe handling and to avoid further contamination or exposure.

It is estimated that there will be between 4,000 and 5,000 containers shipped to and from Foynes Port to Eemshaven Port, in the North of Netherlands, to be treated in a licensed thermal treatment facility.

This project sees the return of containerised cargo to Foynes Port for the first time in many years. We are delighted to have commenced this project which is expected to take 2 to 3 years to complete and kicked off with 273 container moves on the first call to Foynes Port.

Recognition

A big thanks to our team at Foynes, for their efforts and dedication to complete this project and for representing our company amazingly.
